Caring Center History (part 2)

The Caring Center first opened its doors on Tuesday, October 1, 1996 at 7 PM.

During the first few months, ads, personal contacts and word of mouth provided lots of publicity in the AIDS community: but, only four or five AIDS patients came. For various reasons, it was very difficult for them to come. Then the practitioners opened the doors to the entire community, and that's when the Caring Center began to grow.

Patients began to come from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where Randy worked and talked about the Caring Center. More practitioners began to come. A core group of four to six practitioners came faithfully for several months, and spread the word with flyers.

Quickly, the Caring Center began to grow with its new focus on the entire community. Within just a few months, they were doing twenty sessions a night with four tables and ten or twelve practitioners. Some of the guests being treated become so excited about the process, they received training in healing modalities and became practitioners.

In April 1998 an outreach of the Memphis Caring Center was opened at Flying Colors cancer support center, and in February 1999 a second outreach was opened at Wings cancer support center.

In June 1999 the First United Methodist Caring Center opened in Memphis.
